# Beyond the portal: why e-Government UX needs to borrow from fintech.

The best citizen portals we've shipped in the last three years all share one trait — the product teams stopped thinking like government.

Citizens do not separate “government” from “the apps I trust”. They compare your portal to the bank they use daily. That comparison is ruthless: latency, language, and dead-ends matter more than your internal org chart.

## Borrow without cosplaying

Fintech patterns that work are about clarity: progressive disclosure, plain-language consent, and recoverable flows. What does not translate is growth hacking and dark patterns — trust is the product in public sector delivery.

## What we optimise for

We design for comprehension under stress: people filing at deadline, on a phone, with partial documents. Accessibility and auditability are constraints we fold in early, not a coat of paint before launch.
